The small village of Teegarden was founded by Prussian immigrants. The village was named after Rev. William Teegarden. William was the original owner of the land. In 1804, Levi Blackledge built a gristmill along Middle Fork. The mill operated throughout the 1800's, serving the local farmers. In 1868, the first post office in Salem Township was built in Teegarden. The B.F. Lewis Coal & Iron Company operated many mines in the area during the late 1800's.
